BURLINGTON CITY HIGH
Burlington City High School is a six-year secondary school that includes grades seven through twelve with a total current enrollment of 829. The NJ Department of Education and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools have accredited grades nine through twelve, comprised of 612 students. Thirty-two percent of students in grades nine through twelve are students from the neighboring Edgewater Park community. BCHS has served as the receiving district for the Edgewater Park School District, which includes students from kindergarten through eighth grade, for many years. The Junior School, or seventh and eighth grade House, is a self-sufficient entity, housing 217 students in a separate wing. Administrative, guidance and secretarial support are all located within the wing. Increased communication and dialogue with students and parents and common planning time for teachers to provide innovative and interdisciplinary curricular initiatives are all positive benefits of the Junior School House concept.
The ultimate goal of every faculty member is to instill a love and understanding of the value of learning. Students are expected to develop a solid foundation in the academic disciplines and are encouraged to develop a strong sense of personal identity, rational thought process, and excellent communication skills.
Burlington City High School offers its students over 120 course selections in academic, technical and vocational areas with Honors and Advanced Placement courses for the academically talented. Programs such as the Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps and a nationally recognized music program provide opportunities for students to assume responsible leadership roles. Burlington City High School also offers competitive Group 1 athletics for several sports in grades seven through twelve as well as many significant co-curricular activities.
Academic achievement, however, has been the springboard for student success. Sixty-four percent of the graduating class of 2008 plans to attend institutions of higher learning. The class of 2008 achieved an average SAT score of 1387. All eleventh grade students are required to take the High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA). Sixty-four percent of the general education students attained passing scores in math and eighty-eight percent in language arts literacy on the New Jersey Grade 11 High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA), which is required for graduation. Several school initiatives, including extensive school expansion and renovations, will contribute to the academic success of BCHS students and our commitment to improve our school.
Burlington City High School offers its students an alternative education program. Classes, taught by certified staff, are offered in the evenings for students who desire an educational setting that offers small group instruction and an opportunity to seek employment during the day before attending school. The high schools alternative education program is a major factor in reducing the districts drop-out rate.
