BURLINGTON CITY

The City of Burlington School District, made up of three lower elementary schools, an intermediate school, a junior school and a high school is committed to maintaining small, neighborhood schools in an effort to meet the emotional, intellectual and social needs of its student population of approximately 1,881 students. The District also has a "receiving" school relationship with the Edgewater Park School District, which has been sending students to Grades 9-12 since the 1930's. The City of Burlington School District is committed to early childhood education and is proud to offer residents of the community access to a high quality, preschool program for three and four year olds at a newly constructed 12 classroom early childhood center. As can be seen in the individual school report cards, there are numerous indicators that point to Burlington City as a district which is putting forth a great deal of effort in the educational process:
1. Faculty attendance rates (96.8%) are very high indicating that staff members are dedicated and show a commitment to teaching.
2. Student attendance rates (93.5%) are also very high indicating that students are attending regularly in an effort to learn.
3. Student dropout rate (1.8%) in Grades 7-12 demonstrates students' desire to complete their education.
4. Eleventh grade general education students' proficiency rates on the State test are 93.1% in language arts literacy and 63.5% in mathematics.
5. Students at the high school met the State AYP requirements in both language arts literacy and mathematics as indicated by scores from the 2007 HSPA.
6. Advanced Placement courses are currently offered in art, history, English, biology, chemistry, statistics, French language, calculus, United States government and politics.
7. Community support of schools is evidenced by the passing of the 2008-09 school budget.

During the 2007-2008 school year, the district moved forward on several renovation projects. The C wing in Burlington City High School was closed to update the classrooms for the purpose of meeting new building and educational codes. The completely renovated A wing was opened and happily occupied by the students and staff.

The District continued to expand the Adult Education Program to include in-service courses for staff with additional offerings for the community. All teaching staff have the benefit of a Summer Professional Academy. Also, national honor society students provide tutoring for any student needing assistance with schoolwork. There is a Prime Time evening program at the high school.

The City of Burlington School District analyzed State and national test results and shared performance with all teachers and community. The District upgraded programs to meet or exceed the State's more rigorous standards. The District continues to aggressively pursue grant opportunities for the purpose of extending educational programs offered to students. Grants and endowments are obtained through state, federal and private funding sources. The District has formed a Multi-Equity Committee to study classroom instructional processes.
