Dear Parents/Guardians and Students:

I hope you have enjoyed a healthy and pleasant summer vacation.  The start of a new school year is upon us.
Please be aware that students will enter through the rear of the building (2nd Street) and the front of the building (A-wing) – there is only one entrance in the front of the building.

I would like to take this opportunity to share with you information regarding new programs scheduled for implementation at Burlington City High School.  Please find below, descriptions of the programs targeted for
the 2008-2009 school year:

Student Advocacy Groups

Student advocacy groups will be formed during the 2008-2009 school year at BCHS.  These groups will be mentored by a staff member who will be responsible for about seven to eight students.  They will address all student issues, but will concentrate specifically on attendance, discipline and academic progress.  Mentors will emphasize academic success and career planning and awareness.   The Supervisor of Guidance will monitor the program to ensure all needs are met and any necessary services are provided.

Ninth Grade Guidance Counselor ( Ms. Megan Haggerty)

Ms. Haggerty will be solely responsible for providing student personnel services to all ninth grade students.  With the initiation of the 8 to 9 Transitions Program, this individual will work closely with the BCJS counselor and the HS counselors to ensure smooth transitions for all students.  In addition, this counselor will work closely with the Student Advocacy facilitators to ensure the success of all programs.

Freshmen Transition Program

The Freshmen Transition Program utilizes upperclassmen to help incoming freshmen make a successful adjustment into high school.  In conjunction with the Princeton Center for Leadership Training, our faculty advisors will train a team of juniors and seniors to conduct monthly outreach sessions with ninth grade students.  Sessions include the following topics:  decision making, problem solving, time management, active listening, and academic achievement.

Making A Change

As an alternative to Out of School Suspension, students may be placed in the “Making A Change”, (MAC) program.  This program runs from 7:00 AM – 2:00 PM.  Students will be responsible for academics through the Nova Net computer program.  The academic session takes place from 7:00-10:30 at the high school.  In addition, there is a daily community service component from 10:30 – 2:00.  The community service session is run by BCHS staff as well as employees from the City of Burlington.

Classes at Tabernacle Baptist Church

The completion of the high school’s F Wing is scheduled for in September of 2008 and the work on the B wing should be completed by the opening of school in September 2009.  Anticipated construction delays will force us to rent space from the Tabernacle Baptist Church.  The church is located on Second Street across from the entrance to the Burr Gymnasium.  Six classrooms will be utilized by high school staff and students.  We have leased space from the good people from Tabernacle in the past and look forward to working with them this year.

Construction Update

Work on C wing has been completed.  The C wing will house the Burlington City Junior School on the first floor and renovated classrooms and science laboratories on the first and second floors.  The high school and junior offices are located on the first floor of A wing adjacent to the Media Center.

I sincerely appreciate the efforts of all of our parents and guardians.  Your continued help and support will contribute to a successful school year.  I encourage you to maintain an open line of communication with your students.  Please monitor your child’s progress during the school year.  The high school/junior school staff welcomes opportunities to assist you with any and all matters pertinent to your student’s intellectual and social development.

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me at 387-5945.

                            Sincerely,
                            Julian Jenkins, Jr.
                            Principal
